‌‌Other than America, the greatest impact of THE WILD GEESE® was in France – also known in French as “LES OIES SAUVAGES®.” Their contribution was not restricted to the military – where many had the honour of having their names inscribed on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris; where the song “the wild geese” is the anthem of the French Foreign Legion; where over the 17th and 18th centuries, they supplied France with 14 lieutenant-generals and 18 marshals and in the case of Patrice de MacMahon, becoming President of France – but also deeply embedded in the French wine and spirit industry.

France’s Bordeaux wine industry was heavily influenced by LES OIES SAUVAGES®. i.e. famous Bordeaux wine houses such as Kirwan, Lynch Bages, Phelan Segur and Chateau MacCarthy to name a few.

Its Cognac region was also heavily influenced, Founded by Irishman Richard Hennessy, Hennessy® Cognac has become one of the most renowned Cognac producers. Jean Martell, founder of Martell Cognac, though not Irish, was joined by Irish descendants of the Delamain family in elevating Martell cognac’s reputation as well as the region.
